General research in to brand books
What is a brand book:

"Brand Guidelines (also commonly referred to as “brand standards”, “style guide” or “brand book”) are essentially a set of rules that explain how your brand works."

Below are some brand book examples:

As you can see brand books portray the brand and the tone of voice of the company in the brand book this can include the colours being used and logo size and so on. All these things relate back to the brands standard and style guide of the brand.

It was now time to create my brand book. My top 3 words in my word pallet were lively, loud and impatient as I feel those are the three words that best describe me. We were asked to create a flat plan of our book to show the class and our teachers. I do not have it with me anymore but it was very simplistic and technical in terms of its content because I described the actual font which was needed and all the colours in my colour pallet and I also had my entire image pallet and lots of information I either didn’t need or did not explain in my brands tone of voice.

This is when I decided to create the content of my brand book again but with it portraying my three words more. When thinking of what to write I realised that my three words explain a mother’s tone of voice as well. When telling this to my teacher she was really happy with the idea and wanted me to work on it from there.

What I decided to do was write bits and pieces I could use in my content which I thought would portray a loud, lively and impatient feel but mainly impatient as that is what I was trying to do most because I felt it would work really well with the tone of voice for the brand book.

“TOOK YOUR TIME”

“TOOK YOUR TIME, NOW LEAVE ME ALONE”

“YOU ARE TAKING YOUR TIME!”

“WHY ARE YOU TAKING SO LONG”

“FLIP TO THE NEXT BLOODY PAGE NOW”

“JUST TURN ME OVER”

“HURRY UP AND TURN ME OVER NOW’

“ITS SIMPLE JUST DON’T USE IT TO CLOSE TO THE EDGES”

“THESE ARE THE COLOUS IN THE COLOUR PALLETE NOW TURN ME OVER”

“IM HERE TO HELP BUT DON’T STICK AROUND FOR LONG”

“IM HERE TO HELP BUT NOT TO BE STARED OUT FOR SO LONG”

“DO NOT USE ANY OTHER COLOUR THEN THE ONES YOU ARE SEEING”

“IM GIVING YOU A WHOLE COLOUR PALLETE WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU WANT TO USE OTHER COLOURS”

“JUST USE THESE COLOURS! DO NOT GO AROUND USING OTHER COLOURS”

“ITS SO SIMPLE JUST USE THESE COLOURS, DON’T MAKE THINGS COMPLICATED FOR YOURSELF AND JUST LISTEN TO ME”

“I ONLY COME IN THE FONT ‘IMPACT’”

“I ONLY COME IN THE FONT IMPACT SO DON’T BOTHER MESSING AROUND WITH ANY OTHER FONTS”

“AND THIS IS MY BRAND BOOK” (could be in small wavy writing underneath the would blurt to show the lively feel of the word blurt)

“NOW LEAVE ME ALONE” (Last thing you see before closing the book)

After writing loads of different things, which I thought, could work with my brand book and getting a better understanding of how I wanted my content to be I decided to write it again but in order of how I wanted things but also with different versions underneath each other to pick out which sounds best, that is why there is numbers.

“TOOK YOUR TIME”

LAST PAGE

“NOW LEAVE ME ALONE”

After writing my content again I felt like this is what I was going to put in my brand book. So I decided to lay it out better on illustrator to get a better understanding of where the placement of the content would be on the different pages and what I actually had to work with.

(Screenshot below of putting content on illustrator to get a better understanding of where everything goes)

The content above will probably change as the project goes on because I keep thinking of better ways to do it.

As you can see above once having all my content I decided to start looking for imagery which went with the concept of my brand book. What I started doing was finding images that would best describe a mums routine daily with their child.
(As you can see below these are the imagery I found and some of them I have cropped and indesign circle on top of the image and written below is what each picture does in the story.
But actual source of the full images are in the references below.)

Mum going to bed in the end and saying, 'now leave me alone'.

Looking at these Images when they were together I realised that it was hard to tell what was going on visually and I realised that I did not want my whole brand book just to be on what a mum has to deal with. This is because even though blurt is impatient, loud and lively it feels to me like the images should all be very random and not based on a mum but the tone of voice should sound like a mum that is it. So I decided to scrap the idea of having full on images of mums and kids and just be random because I am very random to. I also showed the images to my teacher just to see what she thinks and she said, it was to focused on mum and child imagery and Blurt should have had more random imagery as it is so loud, lively and impatient. After realising myself, I understood what she meant and decided to scrap the idea of having those images.

But before doing that I decided to finalise my content again so I can find the right imagery for the things I wanted imagery for.

"HURRY UP"

"I AM"

"BLURT" (This would be in a pop up form the reason being it would make the book feel more lively which is one of the top three words)

"IM GOING TO TELL YOU A BIT ABOUT MYSELF SO LETS GET THROUGH THIS FAST"

"I AM LIVELY"

"I AM LOUD"

"AS YOU CAN TELL I AM ALSO VERY IMPATIENT"

"I HAVE TO STAY CENTRAL AND DONT YOU DARE EVEN TRY TO CHANGE THAT"

"DONT EVEN THINK ABOUT IT IMPACT IS THE ONLY WAY"

"GET A MOVE ON"

"SIZE?"

"DO NOT ANSWER BACK"

"I HAVE NO SIZE."

"BLURT" (But not the logo would be made huge and spread between two pages)

"JUST REMEMBER IF YOU HAVENT SEEN BLURT FROM A DISTANCE AND BLURT HAS NOT CAUGHT YOUR EYE IT IS NOT BLURT YOU ARE LOOKING AT"

"NOW LEAVE ME ALONE"

"DONT JUST LOOK AT ME..." (Would be placed on back cover)

Also another reason I did my content again was because I did not feel like I needed all the other stuff and for an impatient book it docent really make sense to have a lot of writing when I can use imagery and colours to also help me make my point.

Below are images I found which I wanted to use for the brand book:
Reference to the images are listed below.

As you can see below I decided to use images from my image palette for when I say 'I AM LIVELY' , 'I AM LOUD' AND 'I AM IMPATIENT'. . When looking at my image palette I realised that the two images below three images below for lively loud and impatient had to be better.

Looking at the image for lively below I really liked the idea of keeping the fireworks but when I had printed it out to see what it look like if it was printed out as a a4 image I realised it was all pixelated and fuzzy.

Image below is taken from:
http://modernyachts.blogspot.co.uk/2014_07_01_archive.html

Which is why I decided to look for a better image which was bigger and was better quality so that when I actually print my book hopefully nothing would come out pixelated.

The image below is taken from:
http://www.outdoorstaycations.com/NewEngland/firework-displays-4th-of-july-new-england/

The image below is the image for the word loud in my image palette. Although I feel like it works well with loud I wanted another image becasue I already found an image that of cars in traffic for impatient and I did not want to have two images which were car based which is why I decided to change this one in to the image underneath this one which is of a concert happening which portrays the word loud to. Another thing I like about the image is that it also is similar to the colour of the word loud in my colour palette.

The image below is for the word impatient and as I feel like it make senses to me I had a lot of friends and family who told me it was more on the level of anxiety when I explained it to them. On the other hand that day I was stuck in traffic and realised that I felt more impatient in those type of situations which is why I decided to pick the image underneath this one for my word impatient.

Image below taken from:
https://voicesfromthe3rdfloor.wordpress.com/category/poetry/

What I really like about this image also is the fact that it is eye level to the driver making you feel impatient as you are even looking at it.

"AS YOU CAN TELL I AM ALSO VERY IMPATIENT"
Image below taken from:
http://www.elsegurodeproteccionjuridica.es/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/02a15h7h.jpg?w=300

For:

"HURRY UP"

"I AM"

"BLURT" (This would be in a pop up form the reason being it would make the book feel more lively which is one of the top three words)

"SIZE?"

"NOW LEAVE ME ALONE"

I decided that I was just going to use my colour palette colours for the background image as I felt the colours gave the book a very aesthetically pleasing feel but also portrayed my words well and gave the impact I wanted with the three words. This then brought me to the attention of how I was going to then put my text on top which is why I then decided to think about how to grid my work after I had finished thinking about what images I wanted.

For the phrase below I wanted something very fast flowing so I found this image below which is of speedy looking lights which were going round the road to create the illusion of moving very fast which is what I wanted to portray here of basically saying lets get through this fast.

"IM GOING TO TELL YOU A BIT ABOUT MYSELF SO LETS GET THROUGH THIS FAST"

Image below taken from:
http://www.computerworld.com.au/article/549690/hot_copper_bell_labs_attains_10gbps_broadband_speeds/

Once I had the image above I printed it and saw that it was really pixelated which is why I looked for more imagery to choose from and found this image below which when I printed was good.

"I HAVE TO STAY CENTRAL AND DONT YOU DARE EVEN TRY TO CHANGE THAT"
I was trying to really use that impatient factor in this book which is why most of my phrases sound loud, lively and impatient

The reason I wanted to pick this certain image was because it had the train coming straight towards the person who is looking at the image, making the image already feel more engaging. The other good things about the image is that the train and train tracks and girl are in the centre of the image which relates to what I am trying to say about the logo and how it could be positioned in the centre of the image. The reason I wanted someone tied up in the image in the centre of the image was to show that you will not be able to move the logo from where it is positioned and the 'Dont you dare' part of the phrase relates to that also because you get that loud logo cant move feel which is another reason why the person is tied up in the image.

Image below taken from:
http://photoshopcontest.com/images/large/3pg6ke02h3qr72amcouz8iqn9y630qbklote.jpg

"DONT EVEN THINK ABOUT IT IMPACT IS THE ONLY WAY"

The reason the judge was placed there was to show that demanding feel of dont you dare change something which is why the focus on the picture is the judges hammer to give that loud effect of the judge hitting the hammer and telling you what your allowed and not allowed to do. Which goes well with blurt because when you are loud and impatient you also sound kind of demanding which is what I was trying to portray through this image because it goes well with what I am trying to say in the phrase.

Image below taken from:
http://www.haribhoomi.com/haribhoomi_cms/gall_content/2015/4/2015_4$largeimg107_Apr_2015_010730340gallery.jpg

"GET A MOVE ON"
This is a image a bubble popping which shows shock to the reader when he reads the loud text shouting at him, "GET A MOVE ON".

Image below is taken from:
https://yt3.ggpht.com/-9ZRdnQGDJYA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/UTGCDK2b5VQ/s900-c-k-no/photo.jpg

"DO NOT ANSWER BACK"

For "DO NOT ANSWER BACK" I wanted it to have this small child at the bottom of the page looking scared and shocked showing the reader that Blurt is very loud and impatient. The image will be at a very small size compared to the text and it will also be underneath the text to show the loud and dominant feel in the text over the kid.

Image below is taken from:
http://illinoishd.blogspot.co.uk/

"BLURT" (But not the logo would be made huge and spread between two pages)

This will be of my logo made huge across two pages. The logo does not even have to be properly shown but it has to still be recognisable o the eye that it is a blurt logo.

"JUST REMEMBER IF YOU HAVENT SEEN BLURT FROM A DISTANCE AND BLURT HAS NOT CAUGHT YOUR EYE IT IS NOT BLURT YOU ARE LOOKING AT"

Here I wanted to have the Blurt logo in the centre of an image where it has to be with people looking at it with the phrase above underneath the logo towards the bottom of the image to really but focus on thee logo. When looking for images I kept trying to look for images with people shocked looking at the logo but I kept finding carming pictures like the one below and I felt like it didn't really go well with the lively aspect of my book.

Image below is taken from:
http://goforfun.com.au/tips-and-tricks/what-to-look-for-in-cheap-family-travel-insurance/attachment/vacation-spain-family-lookout/

Then I starting finding images which had more of a thrill to them which my logo could be added to. Here I wanted to make it more adventurous and take out the buildings on photoshop and out my blurt logo there. But unfortunately the image below was to small to work with and also kind of pixelated.

Image below taken from:
http://s3.amazonaws.com/production.reserve123/images/product/20820-1.jpg

Then I found this image below where it showed a crowd altogether walking but I knew I put my logo in there it would look like people came out to see the logo and it was catching everyones attention, which is what the blurt logo is suppose to do.

After finding all my images and knowing what content I wanted to have I decided to start doing some research in to grids so that my text will have an impact on the page when it is placed there.

Research in to grids

Quote taken from: http://www.thegridsystem.org/

"“The grid system is an aid, not a guarantee. It permits a number of possible uses and each designer can look for a solution appropriate to his personal style. But one must learn how to use the grid; it is an art that requires practice. ”

Quote below and images from: http://www.vanseodesign.com/web-design/grid-types/

Manuscript grid

Column grid

Modular grid

Hierarchy grid

"The 4 grids above are the main types of grids you’ll encounter. Each has a different function as far as holding content and choosing the right grid to use should come down to the content for your specific project.
  • Manuscript grids — are the simplest and they work well when presenting large continuous blocks of text or images.
  • Column grids — work well when the information being presented is discontinuous and different types of information can be placed in different columns.
  • Modular grids — work best for more complex problems where columns alone don’t offer enough flexibility. The introduce horizontal spaces between blocks of content.
  • Hierarchical grids — can be used when none of the above grids will work to solve the problem. They tend to be created organically by first placing design elements on the page and then finding a rational structure for presenting those elements."
When trying different grids for my self I decided to grab a piece of paper and fold it in different sections randomly and then outlined the lines which it was folded with, with a pen and use that as my grid when making my book.

After doing that I put it on illustrator and started creating it. What I then realised was to have a template like this it would mean I need to find way more images and the process in to do all of that would be to complicated in the time I had.

What I then realised was having text in a box over the image in the background created a huge impact on the text because it put a lot more attention and focus on the text which it seem a lot more loud then what it was.

I am not using the images used in the experiments below these were just experiments I was doing with griding and it happened to be on these images.

The font I decided to work with was impact because it related to my logo and was the only font which I really felt, had that loud feeling because of how bulky the typeface is.

What I also did was put the colour of the word lively from my colour palette as the banner on the side and this was done to all three words so impatient had its banner colour and so loud. As you can see below here I tried making the box a bit tilted and sharp to give it that lively feel and I feel it worked well but only for the image below because when I tried it for everything else it looked really bad. And because I wanted to keep things consistent I decided just to stay with the box ideas.

Final for, "I AM LIVELY"

What I really like about the white boxes and text is the fact that it cuts of the colours and images and just creates such a huge loud dramatic feel to the text which is what I was looking to do. But whenever there was text on the logo it would have to be without a box as you can see in the screenshot below.

(Not all the images below are correct as I just changed them later on but mainly focused on the type and the white boxes for now.

Screenshots taken from Final book so not everything is properly shown in the screenshots and one bit side may show less than another but overall general view is this.

The image below is where the pop up will go

When going to the printers to bind my book I did it as a staple bind with glossy paper. The reason I picked glossy paper was because I really wanted it to be loud and just up right in your face whilst still keeping that lively feel within the actual paper as well.

The binding was done by SBS and was delivered to me on the same day.

Pop up research

The reason why I decided to do a pop up in the first place was because I have seen a pop up book before and I was so engaged and the book felt so lively and it made the book feel like it was alive.  I know this will make my brand book more lively and loud also and I wanted to do exactly that.

Below are different types of pop up books I have seen which have influenced me to want to do a pop up:

Just looking at the pop up books below you get a sense of excitement to the book and get a loud and lively feel from the book as soon as you look at them compare to if for example the image below was of just an image of a tiger sticking its arms out ready to attack. The feelings I get from all the pop up books below are just that sense of energy and the book feeling more alive.

I then researched how to actually create pop ups and found many ways in which to do it.
The quotes below on how to create a pop up are from: http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Pop-Up-Card

"Cut out a rectangular piece of the colored paper. For best results, make sure the actual card is twice the height of the envelope and the pop up shape one half the height of it. A pop up that's too big will prove cumbersome and hard to manage.
  • Scrapbook paper makes for good greeting card material. Cardstock works well, too -- just make sure your crease is straight and firm."
"Fold it in half, short sides together. Give it a firm crease with your fingernail or a ruler's edge. Make sure it's straight!"

"Make two cuts. Make these about 1 inch (2.5 cm) long. The cut should be made in from the folded edge of the card in order to make a flap. You can make your cuts deeper or more widely spaced if you wish; take into account the size of your pop up. A bigger pop up needs a bigger flap.
  • If you don't like the fact that there's now a gaping hole in your card, cover it up! Take a piece of paper, cut it to size, fold it in half, and voila! You now have a border for the edge of your card. Problem solved."
"Crease the pop-up. Fold the flap over on to the front, then fold it on to the back of the card. Open the card and push the flap up toward you. Pinch the middle to crease it."

"Decide what you want to pop up. It could be a picture of a gift, a name, a heart, a part of a photograph, or anything that takes your fancy. Cut out your pop-up shape and glue it on to the front of the pop-up - i.e., the part that is vertical when the bottom, inside portion of your card is flat against the table and the card is open. Allow the glue plenty of time to dry.
  • For this part, it's best to use a glue stick. You don't want a soggy mess being made of you and the card."
There are many in which you can do it but the most common way to do it is like above.

After printing my book it was time to stick the pop on. I realised that I was not able to stick on the pop up on top of the page like the instructions above because I wanted my pop up to be just on one page and not spread out between two and I also did not want to put my logo to one side because my logo always has to stay central. So what I did was print the logo on heavy weighted paper as white because it looked aesthetically pleasing when on top of the orange I then attached it to folded up heavy weighted paper as you can see in the image below for it to go down when the book is closed and for it to go up when the book is open. I stuck it with double sided paper to the book and logo. This actually worked because when I opened the page the logo would pop up but when it was closed it compressed down in to the page.

Research in to binding

"Choosing the Right Binding Type
The type of binding is usually selected based on the function of the document, the number of pages it contains and the printing budget. Strangely, esthetics are usually considered last in the decision-making, unless quality is a priority and budget is not a factor, or the binding itself is part of the conceptual design."

I decided to do Staple binding for my book as I felt it worked well with my book and the amount of pages it had whilst still keeping a appealing feel. I was considering doing a hard back cover but because of the time I had to do this and because of there only being 20 pages I did not feel like it would look good for a book with only that number of pages.
The actual binding would be given to SBS to do for me.

Research in to paper

Below are some of the different versions of paper you can get with also a description about them.

As soon as I read this I knew that I wanted glossy paper due to it being very eye catching it creates more of a loud and lively feel to my brand book which is what I want and need.

After knowing the binding I wanted and the paper I wanted, I went to SBS and printed my book.

Evaluation

When first starting this project finding the right tone of voice was probably one of the most important things during this whole entire project. The tone of voice I wanted Blurt to have was a mums tone of voice, because I thought a mums tone of voice really reflected my three words as lively, loud and impatient. I then asked my teacher if she thought that it was a good idea to do that and she really liked the concept. So I decided to start writing the content and I really wanted it to sound as loud and impatient as possible. To do this I started by just writing down bits and pieces of content which I thought would sound impatient and something a mum would say, to get the content to sound good. After doing the content over and over again and showing it to people whilst doing it and trying to make it as loud and impatient as possible I felt like I had reached my goal of doing that but I did change it a lot even when I found imagery, I changed certain elements.

After gathering all my content it was then time to find imagery which I thought went well with my content. When doing this I found imagery which I thought related to my content very well and showed a mum and child relationship and how basically the mum was blurt and she was telling the story of being with the kid. When doing this I realised that it was to focused on the mum and child and that isn't what I thought Blurt should be, Blurt should be more random and have more random imagery to really give of that lively, loud and impatient feel and the tone of voice should be the only thing with the mum feel. So I then decided to look for more random imagery which I thought worked really well with the content and tried to make it just look more random and blurt like.

When designing and putting everything together I decided that having a grid would definitely help the design of my brand book. When researching and looking at different grids I realised that I wanted a white box to always surround the text with it on top of the image or the colour in the background to really give of that loud effect. I really liked the way it worked with the coloured backgrounds as I feel that the white box cuts of the colour in such a way that the attention on the white box and the text inside it just becomes way more and just creates much more of a loud effect which also makes it sound more impatient and look more lively, this also had the same effect when it was on top of imagery in my opinion. After figuring out a grid and also showing my colour palette in my brand book in a loud way without having to actually say theses are my colours in my colour palette I felt that my book really came together well and did the job of being lively loud and impatient. What I did not also mention was the pop up in the beginning of the book gives i more of a lively effect as well and the fact that I chose to stay with the font Impact also kept it loud due to its bulky and large feel. When handing it to the printers I also wanted it to have glossy paper as it would make it more eye catching and thats what I wanted blurt to do.

Overall I was happy with the way my project went and I felt it really portrayed my three words lively, loud and impatient. If I had more time to do this project I really wanted to do some embossing as I felt it would look really good on the book but another reason I couldn't do it was due to the price it would cost. Another thing I would have done again is the pop up in my book because even though I felt it worked well, I could probably find a better way to d it but overall I was very happy with the outcome of my brand book.
